HEDGING PLANTS

Beech Hedging

(Fagus sylvatica)

The Beech is a deciduous tree that is native to the UK and prefers sun or part shade.

Beech is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, including chalk. Beech are not suitable for very cold or exposed areas (see Hornbeam instead).

Water freely from spring to autumn to ensure that the hedge doesn’t dry out, especially in the first three years after planting. Regular mulching will help retain water around the roots on drier soils.

Bare-root plants transplants usually establish very well. Preferably plant during October to winter in mild conditions (avoid planting in very windy conditions). Plant approximately 40cm apart.
