(Ilex Aquifolium)
The common English Holly is a native evergreen plant suitable for full sun or shade and is a good choice for hedging for many reasons. Due to its growth rate it is easily maintained, its spiky leaves offer itself as a good deterrent and its delightful red berries attract birds in winter.
Of course, Holly leaves can also be useful for providing extra Christmas decorations!
Suitable for exposed and/or windy locations and most soil types, including chalk.
Planting density is really a matter of choice as Holly only grows around 15cm annually. Plant between 30cm and 60cm apart.
